Personal Background
I have lived in Oliver most of my life and have known many of you for years. But I know there are many new people in Town who may be asking, "Who is this Tom Szalay guy??" For your interest and entertainment, I have provided my personal history, or my resumé, if you will:
I was born in 1958 at the former Saint Martin's Hospital in Oliver; first child of refugee parents who escaped from Hungary during the 1956 revolution.
I grew up on an orchard north of Oliver and attended school at OES and SOSS, graduating in 1976 (50 year reunion this year ... yikes).
I attended UBC and earned my Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Engineering degrees, which led to me becoming a registered Professional Engineer.
I married Louise in 1981. (Sorry, she's from Osoyoos originally, but has come around since then.)
I worked in the City of Vancouver Engineering Department from 1981 to 1990 taking on progressively higher positions of responsibility, ending up as the head of the Projects Engineering Branch.
In 1990, I applied for and was selected for the position of Oliver's Municipal Manager, which I carried out for 24 years.
During my tenure with the Town of Oliver, Louise and I raised our four children, who all attended OES and SOSS for their full school careers.
Outside of Town work, we also converted a small orchard to a vineyard between 1992 and 2007, which is currently the site of the vinAmité Cellars winery south of Oliver.
Since 2007, we have lived and paid our property taxes within the Town of Oliver, enjoying our great views of this beautiful, growing community. (Photo from 2015)
I am a life member of the Oliver Community Theatre Society, having served as a board member from 2015 to 2023, including 4 years as president.
I have been an active member of SOAP Theatre between 2002 and 2024, directing three shows, on stage for 11 productions, and working behind the scenes for many others.
Couldn't help myself ... had to add one more SOAP Theatre photo. (Councillor Grice standing in the back, me in the center, seated - photo from 2016)
